Bike 4 Work Campaign
Bike 4 Work Campaign Ocotober 2011.
Future Prospects and The Bike Rescue Project have joined forces to help unemployed jobseekers get to interviews and new employment more easily. The Bike Rescue Project has donated two fully re-furbished bikes to Future Prospects. The bikes can be borrowed by jobseekers working with an Adviser. They are on short term loan, helping people travel to interviews and through those first few transitional weeks at work while they are getting used to a different routine; or trying out their new schedule and unfamiliar route to work. For those who are new to cycling and want to build up their confidence first, City of York Council can offer group sessions for people who are using Future Prospects’ services. Cycling regularly is a’ built in’ way of keeping healthy. It’s an easy way of being able to expand the distance it’s possible to travel to a job, and a bike can get you to workplaces that public transport doesn’t reach. Cycling to work helps people manage their morning commitments like the school run, by having more flexibility and cutting the time it takes for them to reach their workplace: even a novice cyclist will be cycling at an average of about 10mph, that’s five miles in 30 minute says Mark Gell, Director of the Bike Rescue Project York “We know that people sometimes struggle to take up vacancies on the outskirts of York when they have no private transport, and we wanted to raise the profile of cycling as a solution to this. We are really grateful to The Bike Rescue Project for supporting the journey back to work- quite literally!” If people try out the scheme and want to buy a bike for themselves, we can support them to access an affordable loan scheme supported by York Credit Union or Bike Rescue Project’s buy back scheme. The Bike Rescue Project can be contacted on 01904 733789, or call at: The Hub Station, Lendal bridge, next to Aviva open 6 days a week. www.bikerescueproject.org.uk Last Updated (Friday, 28 October 2011 13:14) |
